Symantec: Applications up leak Data Users

Up users' personal information such as profiles, photos and chat could be leaked to third parties, especially advertisers. That's the claim of a computer security firm Symantec Corp., was quoted as saying by Reuters on Wednesday (05/11/2011).
"April 2011, we estimate that approximately 100 thousand applications (up) allows these data leakage,"according to Symantec's claims representative, Nishant Doshi, the company's official blog.
"In recent years, it is likely there are hundreds of thousands of applications up who accidentally leaked millions of token access to third parties,"said Doshi.
According to Symantec, this third party may not realize that they can access user information. However, this token allows advertisers to post messages or retrieve personal information from a user account.
Facebook itself acknowledges that data leaks and determined to solve the problem. Nevertheless, the Palo Alto social networking origin Symantec insisted that the report was not entirely accurate.
"There are some things that are not accurate in the Symantec report. We've done a thorough investigation and found no evidence that leakage of this access token allow third parties getting personal information," said spokeswoman Malorie Lucich up.
Lucich also underlined that the report ignored the agreement obligations Symantec advertisers and application developers not to store and share user information, a violation of the policy up.
