Avoiding the public displays of affection and staying in this Valentine’s Day? Want to cut through all of the flowers and love hearts and get to the core of what lust and love are really about? If so, you should tune in to the Royal Institution of Australia’s latest installment of its Seven Deadly Sins lecture series: ‘Lust’ – Is Love Blind?
The 90-minute lecture (which is fully booked out but can be streamed live online) will explain topics such as how our hormones affect who we find attractive, whether you can judge a man’s parenting skills by his face and which courtship behaviours really work. It might even help you work out how to score your next partner or keep the spark alive with your current one.
From the comfort of your own home (and perhaps with a bottle of wine and a box of chocolates) you will hear from Rob Brooks, director of the University of New South Wales Evolution and Ecology Research Centre in Sydney, who has dedicated his career to studying the reproductive strategies of different species and how evolution affects our mating choices. Bill von Hippel, head of the University of Queensland’s School of Psychology in Brisbane, will also be speaking about his research into social psychology and the extent males will go to in order to impress a female.
It’s the perfect night for a single person looking to better understand love or a couple that share a mutual love of science. Just don’t blame us if your significant other was expecting something a little more romantic than a discussion about hormones and evolution – even if it is followed by a candlelit dinner.
